Call for Papers: Stat Special Issue on Statistics for Large Language Models and Large Language Models for Statistics

LLMs have recently emerged as a transformative advance in AI technology for processing text, images, and other forms of data. This development has been enabled by the paradigm of pre-training on extensive corpora, coupled with next-token prediction as a training strategy. It is unclear whether this paradigm will lead to artificial general intelligence, but LLMs, and AI more broadly, will surely shape the way our field operates in terms of research, education, and daily work/life activities.

We invite submissions across a wide array of topics, not limited to: (1) the application of LLMs to statistical challenges, such as text-based hypothesis testing, sentiment analysis, topic modeling, and text classification; (2) statistical viewpoints on LLMs, including the role of statistics in the development and evaluation of LLMs; (3) the statistical interpretation of LLMs, such as understanding the probabilistic nature of LLMs and the implications for inference and uncertainty quantification; (4) the use of LLMs to scientific discoveries, such as oceanographic, environmental and biomedical sciences; (5) the development of trustworthy LLMs, focusing on statistical methods to ensure privacy, fairness, transparency, interpretability, and robustness; (6) statistics education in the era of LLMs and other generative AI, exploring how statistics curricula can adapt to incorporate LLMs and their applications; (7) AI governance and transparency.

Keywords: Generative AI, large language model, text, transformer, GPT, uncertainty quantification.
