The Royal Television Society has announced that the winner of the 2012/2013 award for Innovative News is 'Don't Panic: The Truth About Population', which was produced by Wingspan for BBC Two and hosted by Dr Hans Rosling.

The documentary beat off competition from ITN Productions for Truthloader on YouTube and Channel 4 News for #Datababy ITN. It was awarded for being “engaging, compelling and educational, interactive graphics on a massive scale" (www.rts.org.uk)

According to the Royal Television Society, the Innovative News Award is 'for the most impressive achievement by an individual or team in addressing news audiences in an original way. The Society welcomes entries which, through creative production, by integrating traditional broadcasting and new technologies, or simply through a unique or highly original approach to the news, have engaged viewers in ways beyond traditional news broadcasts' (www.rts.org.uk).

After the success of the award-winning BBC Four documentary, ‘The Joy of Stats’, the BBC announced in October that Rosling would return.

Rosling, an internationally renowned statistician and professor at the Karolinska Institute presented ‘Don’t Panic - The Truth About Population as an ‘as-live’ studio event featuring cutting-edge infographics, which formed part of a short series of programmes exploring global population trends for BBC Two’s international current affairs strand This World.

According to the BBC, the ‘myth-busting show, which includes footage shot in Bangladesh and Mozambique, will explore how a growing population and changes relating to wealth and health are shaping the world of today and tomorrow’ (BBC Media Centre, 11th October 2013).

Rosling is renowned worldwide for his compelling, surprising and often very funny infographic talks which harness the world’s data to explore global trends. To watch 'Don't Panic: The Truth About Population', please click here to view it on the Gapminder website.
