This year’s winner was Dr Nicholas P. Jewell, Professor of Biostatistics and Statistics, School of Public Health and Department of Statistics, University of California, Berkeley, who gave his lecture earlier this year.

Dr Marvin Zelen is currently the Lemuel Shattuck Research Professor of Statistical Science and Member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard Public School of Health. He is perhaps best known for his contribution to biostatistics, with ‘Zelen's design’, an experimental design for randomized clinical trials whereby patients are randomized to either the treatment or control group before giving informed consent. As the group to which a given patient is assigned is known, consent can be sought conditionally.

His current research is focussing on the creation of stochastic models for the early detection of disease, and clinical trials, randomization and inference. An interview with Professor Zelen will soon be posted on Statistics Views.

'This annual award, supported by colleagues, friends and family, was established to honour Dr. Marvin Zelen's long and distinguished career as a statistician and his major role in shaping the field of biostatistics. The award recognizes an individual in government, industry, or academia, who by virtue of his/her outstanding leadership, has greatly impacted the theory and practice of statistical science. While individual accomplishments are considered, the most distinguishing criterion is the awardee's contribution to the creation of an environment in which statistical science and its applications have flourished. The award recipient will deliver a public lecture on statistical science at the Harvard School of Public Health and will be presented with a citation and an honorarium.'

Nominations for next year’s recipient can be made by email to or by writing to the address below, describing the candidate’s contributions to statistical science and enclosing a CV. Supporting letters and materials are also welcome. The closing date is 1st December 2012.
