Dr Harry Southworth from AstraZeneca has won the 2012 Award for Statistical Excellence in the Pharmaceutical Industry by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and Statisticians in the Pharmaceutical Industry (PSI) for his work in introducing a method of evaluating clinical laboratory safety during extreme value modelling.

Dr Southworth wrote new software and developed reference datasets to take a well-established risk assessment technique and apply it to biological systems for the first time. He validated this approach through the application of extreme value modelling to retrospective clinical trial safety data and was able to identify the risk of liver toxicity in large human group sizes from small data samples.
