The creation of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) in 1885 was the result of a long history of international cooperation initiated more than 30 years before the ISI was officially established, to formalise the relationships between the many learned statistical societies that had been founded throughout the globe in the early 19th century and provide a platform for statisticians to exchange their experience and knowledge.
