Alan is E.J. Hannan Professor of Statistics at ANU. He has held positions at the University of Chicago and the University of Southampton. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Statistical Association. He has been awarded the 2012 Pitman Medal by the Statistical Society of Australia Inc in recognition of outstanding achievement in, and contribution to, the discipline of Statistics. His research interests include statistical inference, statistical modelling, robustness, nonparametric and semiparametric methods, analysis of sample surveys, and ecological monitoring.

The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics publishes both Theory and Methods and Applications papers. As Managing Editor, Alan would like to continue and expand the efforts of previous Editors to publish high quality papers that both make a significant contribution to Statistics and are accessible and relevant to a wide readership. He would particularly like to expand the number of high-quality Applications papers published in the journal. The current strategy which was initiated by the previous Managing Editor Stephen Haslett is to encourage more submissions and to actively invite authors to submit papers in key, interesting areas.
