Teaching Statistics is a journal aimed at teachers of students aged up to 19 who use statistics in their work with the emphasis on teaching the subject and addressing problems which arise in the classroom.

The first issue of Teaching Statistics was published in 1979, by the newly formed Teaching Statistics Trust, supported by the International Statistical Institute, Institute of Statisticians, the Royal Statistical Society and the Applied Probability Trust. The journal was founded in response to pleas for help from secondary school teachers in England that were struggling with the demands of teaching statistics within their mathematics classes. The original aim of Teaching Statistics was to provide a practical-based journal that teachers could use for help and inspiration and in 2012, the year that the journal reached its 100th issue, this objective remains unchanged. Teaching Statistics continues to be a valuable resource, providing teachers who use statistics in all disciplines with useful, interesting and engaging ideas to use in the classroom.
To celebrate this milestone, we are delighted that the founding Editor and Managing Editor of Teaching Statistics, Peter Holmes and Vic Barnett, are able to reflect on the first 100 issues of the journal in their piece, “Teaching Statistics – from the beginning”.
